Vermont's Preserve America Communities

Sixteen of Vermont’s “Designated Downtown's” were named Preserve America Communities for their local revitalization efforts. The recognition is part of a White House initiative to celebrate and preserve the Nation’s cultural and natural heritage assets. The communities of Bennington, Barre, Bellows Falls, Morristown, St. Johnsbury, Poultney, St. Albans, Montpelier, Windsor, Brattleboro, Brandon, Vergennes, Middlebury, Rutland, and Winooski join Burlington, which was named last year, in this prestigious federal designation.

This federal recognition is reserved for those communities that protect and celebrate their heritage, use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources. Significant economic, educational and cultural benefits flow to communities that recognize the role that historic preservation can play in their revitalization efforts.
