NEW BOARD MEMBERS / OFFICERS
The Chamber is pleased to announce the election of new Board members and Officers. At their November meeting, members elected the following new Board members: Beth Carr of Carr's Florist & Gifts, Kerry Weeks of The Watershed Tavern, and Steve Zorn. Re-elected to the Board were Mary Cliver of Mary Sullivan Cliver, Landscape Design, Emmy Hamilton of First Brandon National Bank, and Sarah Pattis of The Brandon Inn.
The following Officers were elected. President: Nancy Leary of Nancy Leary Design, Vice- President: Sarah Pattis, Treasurer: Bob Schmidtof Robert Schmidt, CPA and Secretary: Mary Cliver. Congratulations to all Board members and Officers.
At the same meeting, two dedicated and hard- working volunteers retired from the Board. Steve Kellogg of Holden Financial Services has been helping the Brandon Chamber for decades. We were glad to have him back on the Board for several years and appreciate all his help. Bernie Carr of Carr's Florist & Gifts just finished six years of service in which he held the post of President for the past two years. Bernie has helped with just about every project and activity the Chamber is involved in. We know that while Steve and Bernie are no longer on the Board, that they will remain committed and active in the organization. Official recognition will take place at the Annual Dinner.
ROUTE 7 PROJECT MEETING
Sometime after the new year, the Chamber and the Town of Brandon will be co-sponsoring the first of possibly several meetings to address the upcoming Route 7 project and its impact on our business community. The businesses on the route will receive special notification as soon as the meeting is scheduled.
BRANDON'S MEMORY TREE
Brandon's Memory Tree sits beautifully in Central Park, lighting the season and giving us reason to remember. The Tree's Lighting and Festivities were wonderful and a delightful way to usher in the holiday season. This activity would not be possible without the help and commitment of so many wonderful volunteers: The Tree itself is in memory of Mr. and Mrs. William Dickerson and Mr. and Mrs. James D. Graham. Thanks to Doug Graham, Scott Rideout, and Bernie Carr for cutting the tree and moving it to town, Dick Kirby for securing it, and Jason Swett and Professional Decorators of Vermont for decorating it. Thanks to Ann Young and the Harvest Program students for donating cookies and Thelma Miner for donating hot cocoa. Thanks to Sandy Munger and her OVUHS student elves for serving and helping with Santa and Mrs. Claus and to Pat Roberts and the OVUHS Chorale and Gene Childers and the Festival Singers for the entertainment. Thanks to Rev. White for the prayer. A special thanks to Charlene Bryant for her tallying the names and getting them printed. And most of all, thanks to everyone who contributed to the Memory Tree, which helps light up the town during this holiday season. Happy Holidays!
CHAMBER DUES
Thanks to everyone who promptly paid the Chamber dues. If you haven't already done so, please write the check and get it in the mail!
WINTER LIGHTS
Downtown Brandon, from Park to Park to Park, is looking particularly beautiful this season. A note of gratitude goes to certain individuals and businesses for their work on this project. Tom Brown of Brown's of Brandon has been the inspirational force behind lighting up our Town. Tom worked tirelessly to make sure there was new wiring at Crescent Park, found donors and volunteers and spent countless hours planning the project. Tom also encouraged volunteers to light up the Brandon Green Park and some of the downtown buildings. The Chamber and merchants joined forces to foot the bill on the wreaths and garland gracing most of our downtown buildings. The outcome is beautiful and helps brighten up the long, dark evenings this time of the year.WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

ASSOCIATION WELCOMES NATIONAL RECREATION AREA DESIGNATION
The Moosalamoo Association welcomes a new designation for the area that took effect when the President signed the New England Wilderness Act on December 1st. This legislation establishes the 15,857- acre Moosalamoo National Recreation Area (NRA), providing national recognition for this premier recreation destination that includes many hiking trails, mountain bike trails, world class cross country ski trails, snowmobile trails, the Robert Frost Wayside and camping at Silver Lake and Moosalamoo campgrounds.
According to the Green Mountain National Forest Management Plan, the objectives of the new Moosalamoo NRA will be to "provide a showcase for multiple use management of the National Forest System, to provide for outstanding educational and interpretation opportunities in the areas of ecological processes and forest management, to provide for public enjoyment of the area for outdoor recreation and other benefits, and to manage for the other resource values present in the area in a manner that does not impair the public recreation values and other special attributes of the Area."
The Moosalamoo National Recreation Area is located in the heart of the 400,000 acre Green Mountain National Forest, stretching from the western slopes of the Green Mountains to Lake Dunmore, and from Scenic Route125 to Route 73.
The mission of the Moosalamoo Association is to collaborate with public entities to plan, manage, and provide stewardship for wildlife habitat conservation and quality public recreation opportunities and facilities; to promote responsible recreation participation and environmental awareness through interpretation, education and resource monitoring; to demonstrate the unique capabilities of public and private partners working together; and to strengthen partnerships at the local level in cooperative projects such as trail construction and maintenance, wildlife habitat improvement, or visual enhancement of roadsides. For more information about the Moosalamoo NRA, contact the Association's Executive Director, Joel Flewelling at 247-5737 or by email at: joel@moosalamoo.org

NOVEMBER 2006 CHAMBER NEWS
CHAMBER DUES
Its that time of the year again — Chamber dues statements are included with this newsletter. After much deliberation, the Chamber Board decided to hold dues steady for another year. This will be the third year in a row that dues have not changed. While our organization's expenses have increased, the Board is determined that while we have a balance in our savings account, that we should not raise dues. We continue to put money back into the community all year long and we keep working on new ways to promote our members. With that in mind, please take a moment to review Membership Benefits and please pay your dues promptly.
WREATHS / GARLAND
The downtown businesses and the Chamber of Commerce are partnering on winter lights for the business community. With a brighter downtown, we hope to lift everyone's spirits and create a warm and glowing village core. Wreaths and garland should be up before Thanksgiving.

STATE TAXES
After making a bit of noise about our state tax situation, we paid the bill and are once again using our time for more productive endeavors.
It has come to our attention that not all businesses are aware of changes to the State Sales / Use Taxes. Vermont is now a member state in the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement. Accordingly, there are new tax regulations as of January 1, 2007. Here is a summary of the most important changes to the Sales and Use Tax Laws:
Clothing and footwear will not be subject to sales tax regardless of price. The current $110 threshold for clothing is repealed effective 1-1-07.
The retail sale of beer will become taxable. The deposit on beer bottles and cans will be subject to tax only when the beverage and deposit are sold for a single charge; when the deposit is separately charged and stated on an invoice or register receipt, it is exempt.
Delivery or shipping charges become subject to tax when associated with taxable sales. Delivery or shipping charges on exempt sales remain exempt.
All canned software becomes taxable whether purchased in tangible form (e.g., CD-ROM) or delivered electronically.
The tax exemption for the first $20 of monthly residential telecommunications services is repealed as of 1-1-07.
Cash discounts given at the time of sale will reduce the sales price upon which the tax is calculated.
For a complete review of the changes, visit the state's website at: www.state.vt.us/tax or call 802- 828-2551.

MEMBER NEWS
Congratulations to Seth and Olya Hopkins of the Churchill House Inn on their recent purchase of Country Inns Along the Trails. It is great news that this business is "back" in Brandon. Country Inns Along the Trail designa guided and self-guided hiking, biking, and skiing vacations.
Welcome to Bob and Rhonda Foley who recently purchased the Old Mill Inn Bed & Breakfast from Patt Cavanaugh and Roger Kowalsky, who are still living in Brandon. Bob and Rhonda are a great addition to town and the innkeeping community!
JINGLE BELL JAUNT
From two of Brandon's residents: Drew Whitney and Jenny Nixon:
"The Jingle Bell Jaunt is a new event in town which will take place on Dec. 10 at noon. Children are invited to tie bells to their shoelaces and skip, gallop or cantor up and down Park Street. After crossing the finish line in this 1K race, families will file into The Brandon Inn for hot cocoa, cookies and caroling around the piano, as well as the grand awards ceremony. Children ages 3 to 12 may register to compete for prizes.
The goals of this event are to promote exercise among kids, bring families together and show community spirit. Participants will be asked to bring a can of soup for the Brandon Area Food Shelf, and registration proceeds will be donated to the local Toy Drive.
It is our hope that this will become yet another quality Brandon event that not only brings together local residents, but also draws people to Brandon from neighboring communities. It was planned for midday to encourage participants to stay in Brandon to enjoy some holiday shopping and dining.
To produce the Jingle Bell Jaunt, we are reaching out to local merchants and businesses for support. If you would like to help sponsor the event or contribute, contact the event organizers."

NEXT CHAMBER MEETING: Nov. 27

At this meeting, new Board of Director members will be elected as well as new Officers. Per the Chamber's bylaws: Section 3: For Election of Board of Directors (Article IV(1)c) and for amending by-laws (Article VIII(1)) each business membership is entitled to one vote.
OCTOBER 2006 CHAMBER NEWS
CHAMBER SLAPPED WITH TAX BILL
The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce recently went through a three-year tax audit by the State of Vermont. We were randomly chosen for this audit and it taught us quite a few lessons!
There were essentially two places where we came up short. Both were out of ignorance. We acknowledge our error with one of the areas. The other is a little more frustrating.
Chambers of Commerce are non-profit organizations. The tax code treats different non- profits differently. Many people have heard of 501(C)3 organizations. These are essentially schools, churches, and charitable organizations. Chamber of Commerce are 501(C)6 organizations. While still non-profit, our focus is different and therefore, the tax code treats us differently.
Chambers of Commerce are required to pay sales tax on all items which we purchase. For the most part, we do that. However, there were some vendors who were not charging us sales tax and when paying some bills, we did not pick up on those omissions. Accordingly, the State went over three years worth of our bills and charged us back sales tax on those things which we had not previously paid.
The next category accounts for the bulk of the tax bill. Since we are not a 501(C)3 organization, we are required to collect sales tax at our annual auction. Sales of casual goods (even used ones) which are donated to us are sales taxable. It doesn't matter that someone already paid sales tax on the item (presumably when it was first purchased). The State went through three years of our auction receipts and slapped us with the 6% sales tax. We met with Tax Department representatives in Montpelier and were able to back out some of the receipts (sales of gift certificates and those made by resellers are exempt from sales tax). However, there is still a substantial sum which was taxable. With interest, of course.
While Montpelier kindly waived the penalties and fees they had originally assessed, we still feel wronged over the auction taxes. We have no problem complying, which we did for this year's auction. But to go back three years and back- assess a Chamber which operates with a small annual budget and which made an honest mistake, is wrong. The entire bill is essentially a penalty since we never charged the tax in the first place. We spoke with the Tax officials but they are resolute in their belief.
We now have the bill due to the State of Vermont to close our outstanding account. The cost, $4,297.05, is approximately 7% of our annual budget. This truly penalizes the communities we serve through our active investment of monies, material and volunteerism. Organizations and their board of directors similar to ours are typically made up of a very transient pool of volunteers. We're sure many Chambers across the state are operating under similar procedures and we feel the Tax Department should issue policy rules and regulation reminders to all non-profits. As we've waded through the bureaucratic process it became obvious that this is, and has been, a very gray area even to the Tax Department officials themselves. Many of our questions needed to be researched before an answer could be provided. It would seem to make sense to offer an amnesty to all groups concerned and start assessing the taxes on an informed and prepared populace. Granted, ignorance is no excuse, but to penalize our communities seem unfair, regressive and counterproductive.
Anyone with ideas or input is welcome to be a part of this discussion with the Chamber Board at our next meeting on Monday night, Oct. 30, at 6:30 pm at the Ball & Chain, or contact the Chamber.

BRANDON CHAMBER GRANTED $25,000 FOR STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS BIRTHPLACE
The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce has received notice of a $25,000 grant award from the Walter Cerf Community Fund through the Vermont Community Foundation for the Stephen A. Douglas Birthplace. The Chamber, in cooperation with the Lake Dunmore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is trying to raise money to take ownership of the building and turn it into a visitor's center, public bathroom, and historic exhibit space. This grant is the first part of funding needed to turn that into reality. The home is one of the oldest buildings in Brandon and the birthplace of 19th century American statesman, Stephen A. Douglas. The Chamber continues to seek other sources of grant funding.
SEPTEMBER 30:
GREAT EVENTS; ONE LOCATION!
On Sat., Sept. 30, Brandon will be a busy place! The Chamber's "Make Your Own Leaf Person" event will start at 10 am in Central Park. Sharing the park with the Chamber will be Brandon's Rotarians with their famous apple pies, St. Mary's Church with a BBQ and bazaar, and the Harvest Program with hayrides and pumpkins. Across the street at the Congregational Church, stop in for a chicken and salad lunch / supper available between 11:30 am - 3:00 pm (eat in or take out).
For more information about the park activities contact the Chamber.
On the same day at 4:00 pm, the park will be transformed into the site of the Brandon Artists Guild Palette Auction. The auction will feature the large palettes which have graced our sidewalks all summer and smaller ones which have been on display at the BAG. Four special palette table tops will also be auctioned. For more information on the palette auction, contact the BAG at 247-4956.
LEAF PEOPLE HELP NEEDED
The Chamber's event on September 30 will create a big demand for volunteers! Please consider helping out for a couple of hours. No experience necessary and fun is guaranteed. Just give a call or send an email and we'll give you a task.
MOONLIGHT MADNESS
OK, we're still talking about Leaf People and here comes Moonlight Madness! Merchants who met and discussed the event way back in the spring decided to "kick it up a notch." Improvements to the event include:
It will be held two nights this year, Wednesdays, December 6 and 20 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm.
Promotion will include "shopping bag stuffers" throughout the fall season which the Chamber will produce and distribute to merchants. The stuffers will promote the event.
Some merchants have committed to offering 20% off store-wide and others will be encouraged to offer the same. In this ever-competitive world (the mall, the internet, etc.), merchants would like to gain back their market share.
Included in this mailing is a registration form for merchants — if you did not receive one and are interested in participating, please let us know.

CHAMBER SUMMER EVENTS
VERY SUCCESSFUL
This summer, the Chamber's events have been progressing quite successfully. With three out of four summer concerts behind us, it is safe to say that there is beautiful music in the Green Mountains! The Auction was a huge success, a good time was had by all at the Golf Mixer, and Yard Sale Day was quite unbelievable!
PRESIDENT'S CORNER
My thanks to all who helped to make this year's auction a success. All the volunteers are much appreciated and make the day run smoothly, even with a thunder and lightning storm smack dab in the middle of prime auction time. We're very lucky to have sooo many repeat helpers and always some newbies to break in. Of course I can't stress enough the hard work, worry and attention to details that Joel and Janet put into this event each and every year. Auctioneer Barb Watters consistently brings the event together with her fun and engaging manner. They are the best. We had a generous Auction Day donation from Naylor & Breen Builders of a Toyota pick-up truck. It was in pretty good shape and had 190,000 miles on it. It sold for $1250.00, and we thank Naylor & Breen for that donation and the flatbed truck they lent us for all our transporting of treasures. Special, special thanks to Gene Pagano and Craig Johnson for their after-auction help with the Toyota, which needed some work in order to pass inspection. Craig donated all his time and materials to patch it up. That was an incredible help to us and a huge savings for the folks who bought the truck. Small town life at it's best.
Finally, our auction total was down about $10,000 this year from last, but if you back out the $12,000 that we received last year for Warren's original painting, we were about the same or a little better with this year's revenue. That means each and every one of us, as members, needs to work really hard next year to provide quality donations. If we want to start reaching the $20,000-25,000 total again that allows us to do all that we do as a Chamber, it's imperative that we step up for this once a year fund raiser and make it happen.
I'm proud of all that we achieve and all the participation that comes together for this event, let's keep it rolling and continue to make it better and better each year. ~ Bernie Carr
GOLF MIXER FUN & GOOD FOOD
Many thanks to Charlene Bryant for her extraordinary organizational talents, Nexus Custom Electronics for their financial sponsorship, and Neshobe Golf Club for their hospitality in making this year's Golf Mixer a big success. The weather was wonderful while experienced and new golfers mingled at the game and over a chicken BBQ. (If you received Brandon Green gift certificates at the mixer as a prize, please check out the bank encoding at the bottom of the certificate. If the numbers are hard to read, please visit the Brandon office of FBNB for re-encoding or call the Chamber). Our next mixer will be in the fall. Stay tuned!
YARD SALE DAY SHATTERED RECORDS
What a tremendous day for Brandon's yard sale holders and shoppers. With 77 sales on the Official Map, the streets in town were jammed all day long. Anecdotally, we've heard many favorable comments from sellers and buyers. The Boston Globe helped out by printing an article in the previous week's Travel Section entitled, "The price might be right at Brandon's yard sale." And so it was!
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
Since our last writing, we have enjoyed two more concerts in the series. Wind That Shakes The Barley performed beautifully for an overflowing crowd inside Fellowship Hall as a storm raged outside. Many thanks to the Congregational Church for opening their doors to us at the last minute.
The Colonial Brass Quintet, part of the US Air Force Band of Liberty, was spectacular on a cool, clear night. The appreciative crowd enjoyed the music and tales of Sergeant Price. Many thanks to the hard work of Dick Kirby for bringing in the Air Force. Dick started this quest about three years ago — it was a pleasure to see it come to fruition. Thanks also to the Brandon Inn for hosting our military guests for the evening. It would have been a long trip back to Hanscom after the concert!
CONCERT SERIES FINALE
The series grand finale is scheduled for Friday, September 1 at 6:30 pm in Brandon Green (opposite the town office). The Remnants are comprised of area musicians who will definitely get you dancing! The Remnants specialize in classic rock from the 1960s and 1970s! Bring Your Requests and Your Dancing Shoes! Bring a picnic or eat in any one of our fine restaurants! Bring a blanket or a chair. A rain location will be announced if necessary. Sponsored by Casella Waste Management.
LEAF PEOPLE JUST AROUND THE CORNER
It is hard to believe that we'll be seeing leaf people on the streets in the near future. This is one of the most labor-intensive projects the Chamber runs. We need to spruce them up, make new ones, put them out, take them in, and sponsor Leaf People Day on September 30. If you would like to help with any part, please contact the Chamber. Many hands make light work.
DOUGLAS BIRTHPLACE UPDATE
The Chamber continues working toward a goal of acquiring the Stephen A. Douglas birthplace. We have now submitted two grant applications and await results. If funds are granted, we will progress with the plans to acquire the home from the Daughters of the American Revolution. If we are not successful with these funding sources, we will continue to seek other opportunities. For more information on this project, contact the Chamber.
BROCHURES IN INFO BOOTHThe Chamber tries to keep the Information Booth stocked with brochures from member businesses. In particular, if you have an attraction or lodging business, please stop by the booth periodically and check your supply. Also, we have tried to hang menus from all restaurants but some have been removed. Again, stop by and check if yours is hanging on the bulletin board. While Brandon's Info Booth may be self-service, it definitely gets quite a bit of traffic.
WELCH TO SPEAK AT ROTARY
Peter Welch will be joining Brandon Rotarians and the general public on Thursday, Aug. 31. The meeting will be held at the Brandon Inn with coffee commencing at 7:05 am, light breakfast, words from Welch and then Q&A. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to the Brandon Inn at 247-5766.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
With the Parade and Festivities behind us, it feels like summer has now begun. Congratulations to the Parade committee for all their hard work and successes. The Chamber was represented in two ways during the celebrations — under the big tent selling hot dogs and hamburgers with the Rotarians and in the line-up with a knock-out float celebrating Getting Married in Brandon. Thanks to the many individuals who helped with these projects:
Food: Steve Kellogg, Chef Donald (from Cattails), Dr. Tom Coleman and Lori, Bob and Linda Schmidt, Mary Cliver, Carolyn Whittaker, Bruce Ness. Thanks to the Rotarians for a great collaborative effort.
Float: The beautiful bride and groom "cake toppers" Kristen Carr and Bruce Perlow; driver: Jim Jasmin; decorators: Beth and Bernie Carr, Patty Fettig, Wendy Rowe, Judith Reilly, Steve Kellogg, Matthew Gibbs, Jim Germond and Steve Carr; equipment suppliers: Celebration Rentals, Wood's Market Garden, Ken Mohan, Ray Reed. Special thanks to the Rowes for use of their space. The Judges awarded the Brandon Is For Brides float the Best Promotion of Business and Tourism prize.

JUNE 2006 CHAMBER NEWS
ABOUT THE INSERTS
This month's mailing contains three inserts. The Brandon Chamber typically does not send advertising with our newsletters, we find these fliers to be of general interest:
1) Brandon's Independence Day Celebration volunteer committee works hard all year just to ensure that one special day in town. The Parade is expensive and takes many hands in order for it to be done well. Last year, the committee began a new tradition — anyone contributing money to the event received a special edition artist print. This year, Brandon photographer Caleb Kenna has donated to the cause. Anyone making a contribution to the Celebration of $25 or more will receive a four season poster featuring four of Caleb's photos. Be generous and help keep Brandon's Independence Day Celebration tradition alive.
2) A number of years ago, the Chamber began a summer concert series in Brandon. We wanted to provide good, free entertainment for residents and visitors to enjoy. Many businesses have stepped forward over the years to help sponsor the shows and for the second year now, Casella Waste Management has agreed to underwrite the series. Casella's community spirit is far-reaching and they have put together a regional event calendar, which is enclosed. We appreciate all they do for our area.
3) The Chamber continues to advocate for the Brandon Wireless Network (high speed internet access). The network is now running on a limited basis and several users are on the system and very satisfied. TelJet, Inc. of South Burlington is the wholesale provider for the network and Got2Web of Rutland is the retailer. You might recall that Brandon was the recipient of a state grant to help build this network. Work continues and we hope to announce the availability to many more users around town in the near future. The grant will pay the majority of the cost of initial installation for people sign a contract with Got2Web. For those who can't wait, there are areas in Brandon which can now receive service (see enclosed flier) and Got2Web will be happy to get you surfing!
NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING
The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce intends to discuss an application for funding to the VTrans Enhancement Program regarding the Stephen A. Douglas birthplace at its next meeting. The discussion is intended to solicit input from the public, answer questions, and discuss the proposal for the future of this historic home. The meeting will take place on Monday, June 26, 2006 at 6:30 pm at the Ball & Chain Cafe. For more information, contact the Chamber
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES KICK-OFF
Gene Childers and the Jubilee Jazz Band kick off the Chamber's free summer concert series on Friday, June 30 at 6:30 pm in Brandon's Central Park. What a great way to start the Independence Day Celebration weekend! Bring a picnic or eat in any one of our fine restaurants! Bring a blanket or a chair. A rain location will be announced if necessary. Sponsored by Casella Waste Management.
SCAM ALERT
From the Attorney General's office. This scam effected lodging properties but we think "let the seller beware" no matter what your business.
The original alert was this: A person will make a reservation for a long period of time, send a bogus cashier's check to the property and overpay. They then request the overpayment back by company or personal check or to have the money wired to a Western Union. Many of these scams originate from outside of the United States, often Africa or the UK. The latest scam is very similar, however, the customer uses a credit card for deposit for a lengthy stay, then calls back to shorten or cancel the stay and get the overage of the deposit wired to them. This scam has several different variations, however the goal is the same, to steal money from you. If anyone overpays then wants to be reimbursed, be VERY wary. If you encounter a similar situation, NEVER wire or write checks for the overpayment. If you have any questions regarding these scams feel free to contact the Attorney General's office at 802-828-2153.
CHAMBER 2006 SCHOLARSHIP
The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship is awarded to an OVUHS student who is well-rounded and has participated in school and outside activities. The student should also be pursuing a course of study in business or a business-related major or who aspires to be entrepreneurial. The Chamber is pleased to present their 2006 Scholarship to Amber LeCompte. Amber will be pursuing a course of studies in Business next year at Southern New Hampshire University. Amber's goal is to work in business or retail and continue into management.

YARD SALE DAY
Make sure to hold your yard sale with the town — Saturday, August 5. For a nominal fee, your yard sale will be on the official map. Forms will be available soon at local retailers.
EAT WELL AT THE PARADE!
The Chamber is teaming up once again with Brandon's Rotary Club to sell hot dogs, hamburgers, soda and bottled water at the Fourth of July Parade (on July 1st). Support your local organizations and look for us under the big tent.
AND ABOUT THOSE TENT CATERPILLARS
A couple of weeks ago, we sent around an email message from Lary Fusco with a helpful hint on the tent caterpillars. While the creepy crawlers are on the downswing now, here's an update from Lary which can be useful next year. "Those caterpillars are still driving me nuts. They are able to cross the Gorilla Tape by climbing over whoever happens to be stranded on the tape. Tonight I was pleasantly surprised to find that a light spray of WD-40 on those guys makes them become motionless, and eventually, fall off the tree-dead. An added bonus is that any residual spray on the tree repels the newbies headed back up to snack on some fresh leaves. And last but not least, your tree will never squeak or rust."
SUPPORT FERAL CAT PROGRAM
Love them, or hate them, this Saturday, June 17th (rain date 18th) you have a chance to reduce the cat population in town by supporting the Town of Brandon Feral Cat Assistance Program (FCAP) Yard Sale in Central Park. All funds will be used to spay/neuter feral cats, provide food and medicine for their kittens (who are then placed for adoption through RCHS), and related support of the program.
CHAMBER NEXT MEETING: JUNE 26
The Chamber's next regular meeting will be Monday, June 26 at 6:30 pm at the Ball and Chain Café. The meeting is open to all members and the general public. The Chamber will not meet in July.
APRIL 2006 CHAMBER NEWS
PAPER & WEB-BASED MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORIES:
The Chamber’s new Membership Directory is enclosed. This is a comprehensive listing of all our members and represents a very good percentage of the businesses in Brandon. Please use the Directory frequently and patronize these businesses. Without a strong membership, the Chamber would not be able to carry on the activities we do, sponsor events, or promote the town. While the paper Directory is only updated once a year, all new memberships plus listing changes we are informed about are updated on our Web Directory, which can be found at: www.brandon.org/members.php.
The Chamber does not sell our mailing list nor do we distribute members’ email addresses. All emails are sent "blind." All business members who have provided us with an email address have it listed in the Web Directory although it is not directly linked back. (Exception: Lodging properties have their email addresses linked from our Accommodations page).
Having said all that, web spammers are crafty and will go to great lengths to do their damage. Accordingly, several members have mentioned they have received spam or junk email which they believe has come as a result of their email address being printed on the Chamber website. We apologize for unwanted mail you might receive. If you would like us to remove your email address from our website, we would be glad to do it. Just let us know.
RETREAT HELPS BOARD FOCUS
The Chamber Board spent a productive evening several weeks ago with a skilled facilitator, reviewing past goals and establishing new ones. After a relaxed dinner at Cattails, the Board spent several hours reviewing what they accomplished this past year, what they had hoped to accomplish but didn’t quite achieve, and what is on the agenda for the coming year. With that in mind, a Work Plan was created. Besides continuing with the Chamber’s current level of activities, events, membership services, and projects, resources will be committed to two additional endeavors.
Brandon Is For Brides is a marketing approach to promoting the town as a wedding destination. A good portion of the town’s businesses were identified as being able to benefit from weddings and a comprehensive marketing approach is being developed.
The acquisition of the Stephen A. Douglas house is a continuing project. The Chamber has been offered title to the Douglas house and we continue to explore the big picture of property ownership and what we could do with the building, before we make a final commitment. For more information on either of these projects, please contact the Chamber.
MERCHANTS PLANNING TOGETHER
A group of Brandon merchants recently met to discuss, among other things, Moonlight Madness. What better time to start planning than the spring! A decision was made for the Chamber to sponsor two Shopping Nights this December. They are scheduled for Wednesdays, December 6 and 20.
Merchants are eager to plan a "theme" for the Moonlight Madness evenings in order to make them special. Accordingly, a private Google chat room has been established for merchants to talk to each other for idea and planning purposes. Merchants have received additional information from the meeting as an enclosure to this newsletter. If you did not receive an enclosure but would like to know more, please let the Chamber know and we will get one out to you.
FLOWER BARREL SPONSORSHIPS
Similar to last year, the Chamber will be partnering with Woods Market to plant and distribute flower barrels downtown. We are asking for downtown business / building owner participation. In order to keep the barrels looking fresh all season, we need YOU to sponsor a barrel. The initial cost is $25 and you will be asked to water, pinch, and keep the barrel fresh looking throughout the summer. Please send a check to the Chamber to cover as many barrels as you would like. Jon’s got them growing in the greenhouse and as soon as it’s safe, he’ll get them distributed!
INDEPENDENCE DAY FLOAT PLANNED
The Chamber is planning on putting together a float for the Independence Day Parade (scheduled for July 1). The theme is "Brandon Is For Brides." Volunteers are needed to build the float and ride the float. Please contact the Chamber if you are willing to help out.

MARCH 14 EVENT UPDATES
DINNER SERVICE
This past Tuesday found two teams of Chamber groups helping out in the community. A large team of volunteers served a delicious St. Patrick's dinner to Brandon's Seniors. The Senior Center uses their monthly dinners to raise funds for their parking lot fund. Different businesses and organizations sponsor a dinner and the Chamber proudly took on the Corned Beef and Cabbage meal this month! Thanks to the following, who helped out and lent a hand: Fred Rollenhagen, master chef, Sheri Sullivan, AKA Plan-It-Sheri, Emmy & Quin Hamilton, and Debbie Kirby & Carolyn Whittaker, expert prep cooks. Thanks also to the following team of important servers and cleaners: Jane & Steve Carr, Frank Bunting, Mary Stanley, Dr. Thomas Coleman, Laurie Cattrell, Beth & Bernie Carr.
BRANDON IS FOR THE BRIDES
As part of the Chamber's year-long theme promoting weddings, a group of Brandonites headed to the Holiday Inn with our Brandon Is For Brides display. The event was the Rutland Chamber's Annual Trade Show and we spent quite a bit of time talking up the town. Our display featured a gorgeous wedding gown lent to us from JoAnne's Bridal, a beautiful flower arrangement from Carr's Florist, a cake-to-die-for from Judy Bunde at The Inn On Park St., wedding jewelry from Rebecca Zelis Jewelry, and a special wedding invitation from Lasso'd Moon Design. Judy Bunde also made enough cake to distribute 100s of pieces to the public. Special thanks to Nancy Leary of Nancy Leary Design for her work on the display, Visual Learning Company for lending us their display wall, and those who staffed the booth: Sarah Pattis, Doug Sawyer, Judy Bunde, Mary Cliver, Dick Kirby, Wendy Rowe, and Jim Germond.

The Chamber Scholarship will be presented to a student who is well-rounded, has participated in school and outside activities, who is pursuing higher education, and is planning on a career in business or aspires to be entrepreneurial. BRANDON SHOPLIFTING INCIDENT UPDATE
Carr's Florist has received a Police Department update on their shoplifting incident of Jan. 4, 2006. In a letter dated March 14, 2006, Brandon Detective Sergeant Laurie Krupp informed Bernie and Beth Carr that the Rutland County State's Attorney office has decided to take "no action" against the shoplifter, who removed merchandise from their business without paying for it. The Chamber feels this is an area of concern for Brandon businesses.

LILAC INN RECOGNIZED AS A TOP WEDDING DESTINATION IN VERMONT
The Lilac Inn is one of four venues in Vermont to be recognized as being among the top wedding destinations in the country according to a new book entitled 100 Best U.S. Wedding Destinations, by wedding expert Kathryn Gabriel Loving.
"The recognition is obviously fantastic, and we couldn't be more pleased," said Doug Sawyer, co-owner of The Lilac Inn and a board member of the Vermont Association of Wedding Planners. "Vermont has specialized in destination weddings for many years, and now that the trend toward destination weddings is really growing nationwide. We are well positioned to take advantage of it because Vermont can offer such a wide variety of unique experiences."
In the most basic terms, a ‘destination wedding' is when a couple travels to a special place for a wedding, and combines the ceremony with the honeymoon. Sawyer says destination weddings are growing in appeal. "Our destination wedding couples really enjoy the added bonus of spending two to three days with their family and friends. Some of our couples discovered us online or through word of mouth, but many fell in love with Vermont while on vacation, in camp or while attending a Vermont college. They are eager to make Vermont the place they begin their married life. Their Vermont destination wedding becomes more than a wedding – it becomes a special time to share their ‘big day" and the unspoiled beauty of Vermont with their family and friends, most of whom have never been here."
Weddings and civil unions are big business according to state tourism officials. Tourism and Marketing Commissioner Bruce Hyde says, "With the average cost of a wedding now over $26,000, and with many well in excess of that, it is clearly a major contributor to our economy." The other important factor is that weddings and civil unions not only bring couples to Vermont but their friends and family as well. This generates revenue, but also introduces a lot of people to Vermont as a vacation destination, some who come from places our standard marketing campaigns might not reach."
Congratulations to the Lilac Inn for this designation.

FEB. 2006 CHAMBER NEWS
CHAMBER ANNUAL DINNER BIG SUCCESS
Before a large crowd at the Chamber's Annual Dinner Meeting, held in January at the Brandon Inn, President Bernie Carr introduced a new Chamber initiative. The Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Dunmore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have announced an exciting proposal for the Stephen A. Douglas historic house, located on Grove St., in Brandon. The home is the birthplace of Stephen A. Douglas, well known for his Presidential candidacy and his famous set of debates opposite Abraham Lincoln. The home was built in approximately 1802 and Douglas was born there in 1813. The home has been owned by the DAR Chapter since 1917 but the few remaining Chapter members are unable to steward the property in the manner in which they would like.
The Chamber was approached to see if there was interest in the organization taking title to the property, upgrading the building while retaining the historic nature, and making it available to the public. The Chamber Board of Directors has established an exploratory committee to review all avenues of property ownership, availability of grants and other funding sources, and to determine feasibility. The Chamber would like to include interested Chamber and community members in determining the future of this national treasure. Let us know if you are interested in being a part of this exciting project.
PRESIDENT'S AWARD PRESENTED
Also at the Annual Dinner Meeting, Bernie Carr presented the President's Award to Anne Young, executive director of the Foxcroft Farm Harvest Program.
Carr recognized Anne and her husband Ken Young and the work they do with area youth. The Youngs are involved with very diverse segments of our population. For the past four years they've helped countless at-risk teens and pre-teens with social, behavioral, emotional issues and family and school interactions. They are involved with many of the region's elderly, the elementary schools, children with disabilities, and foster kids. The Youngs started the non-profit organization and run it with no expectation of recognition and only with the best interests of those they touch at heart. Carr described some of the community projects the Harvest Program students are involved in and some of their projects. The underlying theme in all the program's activities is to help others. In doing so, they teach students about support, guidance, trust, and dedication. Congratulations and thanks to Anne and Ken on their many successes and achievements.

1) The Chamber will be cooking up a storm for Brandon's Senior Citizens. The Seniors hold monthly dinners sponsored by different area businesses and organizations. The Chamber will be cooking and serving the Seniors their St. Patrick's Day feast. If you would like to help cook, serve, clean, and join in the fun, let us know. We'll put you to work for a good cause!
2) The Rutland Chamber Business-to-Business Trade Show is great fun and an excellent place for Brandon's businesses to promote themselves. If your business would like to market to the Wedding crowd, we can help showcase your service or property. We would like to include lodging properties, food service, hairdressers, musicians, photographers, florists, and activities. All you need is a glossy photo and we will make sure you are included in our display. Let us know.
MESSAGE FROM PAT WOOD
Daughter of Sally and Bob Wood
"I hope the New Year finds you well and in good health; I sure need to be. Despite the cold and wet of the season I'm busy training for a spring hike into the Grand Canyon. Yes, your read that right!! For the next three months, rain or shine (or hopefully snow) I'll train hundreds of hours (indoors and outdoors), ask lots of people for money, and put in over 200 cold, hot, wet, dry, tired, fresh, sore, blistered, committed miles, hiking many up and down as many hills as I can find to prepare for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Hike for Discovery", a trek down into the Grand Canyon set for April 27 – 30, 2006. Why?
Cancer. Blood cancer. Non–Hodgkin's lymphoma. That's what my father and my family were dealing with for most of last year. My dad contracted a lymphoma of the brain last year, and in a cruel twist of fate, this intelligent, articulate and active man was rendered unable to speak or move, just when the hardest working man I have ever known was finally able to retire. Though he received excellent care, the disease was little known and was not diagnosed for several anguishing months. My father, though unable to speak, certainly understood the impact on his body and his quality of life, and it was a frustrating and heartbreaking time until an expert in lymphoma was located and was able to diagnose the issue.
Dad lost his battle this fall, and while he was in the later stages of the disease, a friend of mine Lynne, 35 years old, was also diagnosed with a brain lymphoma. She is fighting it, and because it was diagnosed early, she has an excellent chance of achieving full remission. These experiences were the most recent of several which have demonstrated to me very personally that the care, passion, support and dedication of the medical community, as well as the ever-improving technology available, really can make a difference.
Now it's time for me to help make a difference. Inspired by my friend Lynne and her commitment to fundraising while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, I have chosen to participate in the Leukemia & Lymphoma society Hike for Discovery. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. I've set my sights higher than just training to hike into the canyon though. I aim to raise at least $3,700 to help this worthwhile fund.
Though I can do the training; I need your help to reach my fundraising goal. Every dollar you donate is tax deductible and at least 75 cents of it goes directly to research and patient services. Please use this website for easily making a contribution. http://www.active.com/donate/hfdma/hfdPWood. You will receive an email confirmation of your donation and I will be notified of your generosity. If you have already given, thank you on behalf of those you've helped. If you can give again you'll be providing even more to those who are committed to BEATING CANCER. If you would like to donate and do not use the Internet, you can send a check made out to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to me at: Pat Wood, 12 Acadia Street, Apt #1, South Boston, MA 02127. Thanks, Patty"

The Chamber's website is getting better every day. While there is still much work to be done, we have upgraded software, made enhancements to the menus and rewritten some text. As a membership benefit, all members receive a free link to their own website and we encourage everyone to link from their site to our's. In addition, some members have a paragraph describing their business. Check out the site and let us know how we can better serve you.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HOST A MIXER?

PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS FROM MAIN STREET
Brandon merchants recently experienced two situations which I believe deserve comment. The first incident involved a shoplifting, in which an employee at Carr's Florist witnessed a customer putting merchandise in his jacket pocket. The customer eventually left the store and because the quick-thinking employee had alerted others in the store about the shoplifter, he was able to be confronted and Brandon PD was called.
The second event involved a manic customer who was shopping at a number of downtown shops one day last month. This is a long story but to keep it short, I'll give the abridged version. This customer told merchants in the stores he visited that he wanted to buy many things. He picked out books, art work, and antiques. But, he had left his credit card in the first store he was in and repeatedly said he had to go back before he could pay anywhere else. He kept saying he was leaving, but he kept taking things from walls, shelves and counters and then saying he would be back for them later. He finally left and eventually did make his way back to some of the businesses for a second visit, at which time he did pay for some of the merchandise.
As a merchant, I personally spent quite a bit of time with this customer and can attest to the different emotions he caused. At first glance, there was disbelief. "Is this guy for real? Is he really going to buy all this?" After a while, there was suspicion. (Especially after word got around town he had stolen a framed print from a restaurant bathroom wall). So, the new thought was, "Is he going to rip us off?" "Is the cash counterfeit?" "Are the credit cards stolen?" Finally, by the end of the day and after a conversation with the Brandon PD, who had been called by several merchants, there was a lot of compassion for this gentlemen. It was learned that he suffers from mental illness and probably was off medicine that day. He was exhausted and exhausting.
Lessons learned:
Keep an eye on customers. Even those well-dressed and driving nice vehicles can steal from you.
Keep the Police Department phone number(s) by your phones. Emergency is 911. Brandon non-emergency is 247-5723. Keep the Chamber Membership Directory near your phone. It is full of numbers of friends, neighbors, and nearby business people who could help.
Learn how to distinguish real from counterfeit bills.
Talk to your credit card merchant and learn about your liability if someone uses a stolen card to purchase merchandise at your business.
And most important — NETWORK. When the manic customer was shopping, all the merchants in town were talking to each other. "What was he doing at your shop?" "Did he say he was coming back?" "Where is he from?" "I called the police, they are doing a background check." "I heard he stole something from the restaurant." "He said he is coming to your place next." It was very comforting to me, personally, that there was a lot of support and conversation between the involved merchants.
Develop a plan for what you would do if you feel threatened by a customer (either for your merchandise or yourself). Short of calling 911, think about what you could do if you are placed in an uncomfortable situation. Don't be afraid to call for help.
Each business may operate individually but there is a connection and it can be very helpful.
— Janet Mondlak
CHAMBER NEXT MEETING: FEB. 27

JAN. 2006 CHAMBER NEWS
WREATH PROJECT
You have all hopefully noticed the wreaths hanging from just about every downtown building this holiday season. Professional Decorators of Vermont, a Rutland firm, was hired by the Chamber to do the project. Donations from many businesses helped defray the cost of the wreaths, but the Chamber footed most of the bill. We've had lots of favorable comments and like the look. The Board will be talking at their next meeting about continuing this project in future years. If you would like to weigh in, let us know what you think.
INTERNET USE SURVEY
Enclosed, please find an Internet use survey we'd like you to fill out and return. This was emailed to members in December but we didn't have a great response rate so here it is again! If you've already sent it in, you don't need to do it again. Your answers will help guide us through search engine optimization and keyword improvements. Translation: let us know how you use the Internet for business, how your customers find you on the Internet, and what keywords are important to your business. We will take the results and make improvements to the Chamber website to make it work better for you.
HEALTH INSURANCE
The Brandon Chamber is a member of VACE, an organization which makes affordable quality health care available to thousands of Vermont businesses. Being able to buy this insurance plan is a benefit of your membership. If you are looking for a new policy, check out this CIGNA plan. In addition, the Chamber is affiliated with Delta Dental, a leader in dental insurance. Ask your insurance agent for more details or contact the Chamber for a referral to an agent who sells these products.
LOW INTEREST LOANS AVAILABLE
TO CHAMBER MEMBERS
A number of years ago, the Chamber and the now-defunct downtown revitalization organization called Brandon Village Partnership established a low-interest loan fund available for qualifying businesses. The intent of the fund is to make money available at low interest, without a lot of paperwork and without collateral. The money is to be used for building and facade improvements. One requirement is that the monthly payments must be charged to a First Brandon National Bank account. The fund has been lent a number of times and is now available again to an interested party or parties. There is approximately $2500 available. For more information and to see if your project qualifies, contact the Chamber.
