CHAMBER’S 2005 NEW BOARD MEMBERS AND OFFICERS
The Chamber is pleased to announce the election of new Board
members and Officers for the 2005 year. New Board members are Ed Bratton of
Maple View Farm Alpacas, Emmy Hamilton of First Brandon National Bank, Wendy Rowe of Rowe Real Estate, Doug Sawyer of the Lilac Inn, and
Robert Schmidt, CPA. Re-elected board members are Jon McNeill of
Vermont Tubbs and Nancy Leary, Nancy Leary Design.
New Officers are: Bernie Carr, President; Steve
Kellogg, Vice-President, Robert Schmidt, Treasurer, and Mary
Cliver, Secretary. Outgoing Board members include Cindy Thomas, Scott
Cooper, and Diane Bryant as well as two who have attained status as Honorary
Directors, Warren Kimble and Matthew Gibbs. Congratulations to all new board
members and officers.
SUPPORT THE AREA’S NON-PROFITS
We all have a great opportunity to sponsor three local
non-profit organizations in the coming weeks while enjoying some entertaining
and tasty evenings.
Brandon Area Rescue Squad presents A Taste of Vermont with
A Hint of Chocolate on Monday, January 17 starting at 5:30 pm. For this
event, Chef Robert of Café Provence has organized select area chefs to come
together to create their specialties. Spend the night tasting foods while
supporting BARS’s building fund. Admission is $50 per person. Contact Debbie
Boyce or Melissa Thompson at 247-4842 or email: debbiendan@pshift.com. You may
also send in $50 per person with your name, address and phone number to BARS
January fundraiser, Attn: Debbie Boyce, PO Box 232, Brandon.
Crossroads Arts Council is a community focused arts
organization serving the greater Rutland region. Part of the organization’s
mission is to provide educational programs to area schools. One of Crossroads’
most exciting fund-raising events is the annual Robert Burns Dinner which
celebrates the life of the famous poet and all things Scottish. Crossroads Arts
Council has decided to bring this event to Brandon this year and it will be held
on January 29 at the Brandon Inn. The Arts Council hopes this to be the start of
a mid-winter tradition in Brandon. The event will feature bagpipes, music by The
Highland Weavers, a delightful dinner (including some traditional Scottish fare)
and a wee raffle all included in the $35 per person ticket price. The Arts
Council is also looking for gift or gift certificate donations and business
sponsors. Contact Crossroads Arts Council at 775-5413 or board member John Dilts
at 247-3006.
On Saturday, February 5, the Friends of Brandon Town Hall
will be holding a Mardi Gras Ball at the Brandon Inn. All proceeds will
benefit the Town Hall. The Ball will feature Gene Childers and the Jubilee Jazz
Band. There are a couple of ticket options: The Big Ticket costs $40 single/ $75
couples and includes pre-ball hors d’oeuvres with live piano music and cash
bar from 6:30 - 8:00 and admission to the ball from 8:00 - 11:00 pm. The Party
Ticket costs $25 single/$50 couples and includes admission to the ball. Costumes
optional (but let you in on great prize opportunities). Buy tickets at the
Warren Kimble Gallery or call 247-8403 for more info.
MARCH 8 - BUSY DAY FOR THE BRANDON CHAMBER ~ YOUR HELP IS
NEEDED
On Tuesday, March 8, the Chamber will be involved in two
significant events. While they both happen to fall on the same evening, we feel
that with enough help and support from the membership, we will be able to
fulfill both commitments.
The first event is sponsorship of the March Senior Citizen’s
dinner. We will be cooking a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dinner and need
cooks (you can choose to cook on- or off-site and all food costs will be
reimbursed), a set-up crew, servers, and a clean-up crew. One person is needed
to step forward and "take charge" of the kitchen. The Seniors use
their monthly dinners to raise funds for expanding and improving their parking
lot.
The second event is our participation in the annual
Business-to-Business Trade Show in Rutland at the Holiday Inn. This event is
sponsored by the Rutland Chamber of Commerce and this will be our fourth year
attending. We always build a great display and find this is a wonderful way to
do outreach within our regional community. The show’s hours are 4 - 8 pm and
we will need helpers " to talk about the town" in two hour shifts.
To help with either of these events, please contact the
Chamber and secure your March 8 task!

annual fundraiser. It is the only time in the year that we ask each member for a
donation. As you are planning your 2005 giving program, please remember to
budget something for us. By holding a successful fundraiser once a year, the
Brandon Chamber is able to keep membership dues affordable, run popular programs
and sponsor enriching activities.
CHAMBER DUES
Thanks to the many members who paid their Chamber Dues in a
timely fashion. If you haven’t yet paid, you should find a statement with this
mailing. Please pay promptly so we can print and distribute our 2005 Membership
Directory.
MIXER NEWS
Thanks to Liza Myers and Jim Germond for their great mixer
earlier this month. Despite the icy weather, we had a great turnout to see Liza
and Jim’s new place!
Member Invitations for our Annual Dinner are enclosed. Please
respond promptly so Chef Louis can begin food preparations!
FBNB NEWS
First Brandon National Bank is creating a community service
bulletin board for any area resident to post a picture of their son, daughter,
husband, wife, significant other, etc. who is serving in our armed forces. FBNB
encourages folks to bring in photographs, in uniform, for the community and to
show support for the troops. See Sara Stevens at the Bank for additional
information.
NEXT CHAMBER MEETING - JANUARY 31
The Chamber has skipped a December meeting and will next meet
on Monday, January 31, 2005 at 7:15 pm at the Ball and Chain Café. All Chamber
members and the general public are invited.
DEC. 2004 CHAMBER NEWS
DUES
With this mailing is a statement for your
2005 Chamber dues. The Chamber likes to provide service in as many ways possible
and to all businesses in our area. We can only do so with revenue! Please pay
your dues promptly to avoid the time and cost of rebilling.
POSTAGE COSTS
INCREASE
The Chamber has sent +650 visitor /
relocation packets to interested people so far this year. These are qualified
leads — people who have taken the time to directly contact the Brandon Chamber
either by phone, mail, or e-mail. The vast majority had already been to the
Chamber website before contacting us. To each of these inquiries, we send all
types of marketing and promotional materials. Some of the publications are
Chamber-produced and others are from private businesses. The cost of mailing
these packets has recently increased and accordingly, we are increasing our fee
for including private brochures. The fee will be $25 a year (still a bargain)
and will be due with your dues statement.
If we have included your business brochure
in the mailings in the past, you are being automatically billed with your dues
statement. If you have not been involved in the past and would like to be,
please send an additional $25 with your dues. You will be contacted for the
materials on an as-needed basis. For more information, contact the Chamber.
HEALTH INSURANCE 2005
One of the Chamber’s most popular member
benefits is our connection with a great health insurance plan. Our benefits
coordinator, VACE, has worked hard to keep premium increases to a bare minimum
for 2005. If you are looking for a new health insurance plan, consider our CIGNA
offering. Contact Paul Gladding at Holden Financial Services (247-5761) for
premium and deductible details.
BROADBAND GRANT AWARDED TO BRANDON
Brandon has been awarded a state grant to
help deliver broadband telecommunication services. The town will receive
approximately $50,000 to assist in deploying wireless broadband infrastructure.
Gov. James Douglas said the deployment of advanced telecommunications services,
specifically high-speed broadband and quality wireless voice services, are
critical to Vermont’s economic future and a central component of his job
creation agenda. "In order for Vermont to be competitive, we need to be
able to communicate anywhere, anytime; in short, we need to wire Vermont,"
he said.
The grant program supports public-private
partnerships. The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce worked hard on this
initiative and grant application in conjunction with a private company from
Burlington called TelJet, Inc. With TelJet’s telecommunications expertise and
the Chamber’s ability to reach the local business community, this is an
exciting project which should provide wireless broadband coverage to almost
every locale in the town and possibly into surrounding communities by spring
2005. It is expected the Town of Brandon will be the grant administrator. In the
near future, more details about these opportunities will become available. If
you have questions please feel free to contact the Chamber.
HOLIDAY LIGHTING
At the time of this writing, the holiday
lighting project is near completion with some trees still being worked on.
A big thanks to:
Tom Brown for brainstorming and bringing
this project to fruition.
Kirk Thomas and his crew at Vermont
Protective Coatings for all their hours hanging lights.
All the business owners who contributed
to the Holiday Lighting Fund.
MIXER NEWS
Thanks to Jim and Trish Gordon at Maple
Grove Dining Room and Cottages for the wonderful mixer on Nov. 3. We had a great
crowd, awesome appetizers, and a wonderful atmosphere.
Don’t forget to stop by for our next
mixer at Jim and Liza’s new place on Friday, Dec. 10 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. See
the enclosed flier for more details.
BRANDON GREEN
For a number of years, the Chamber has
sold Brandon Green — Gift Certificates to Shop in Brandon. These certificates
are available for sale at the Brandon office of First Brandon National Bank. The
Chamber asks all members to accept these Gift Certificates. When sold, the
Certificates are packaged in a special envelope with current membership
directories. Businesses redeem the certificates just like cash or a check —
just add to your bank deposit. They are available in $5 increments. Certificates
are light green in color, larger than a dollar bill and are pre-signed by the
Chamber Treasurer. Consider giving Brandon Green as
gifts at holiday time — a great idea for employee gifts, stocking stuffers,
teacher presents, the kids, the grandparents, etc.
FBNB NEWS
First Brandon National Bank is pleased to
announce their new website. Check it out at www.fbnb.com. First Brandon is
expected to announce on-line banking sometime by next summer.
VOC REHAB CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS
Thanks to the folks at Voc Rehab Vermont
and VABIR (Vermont Association of Business, Industry, & Rehabilitation) for
a recent presentation to the Brandon Rotary Club in conjunction with the
Chamber. These organizations work to help Vermonters with disabilities find and
maintain meaningful employment. For more information, contact the Chamber or
call Gary Jaquith, Placement Specialist with State of Vermont Vocational
Rehabilitation Division, at 786-5934.
WEDDING PROMOTIONS ON THE WEB
The Chamber is still working on a new
Wedding Promotions page for our website. If you would like your business
information to be included, please send us an email with text / photo. There is
no fee to participate — this is another benefit of your Chamber membership.

The Chamber has been working on a Map
& Guide reprint for quite some time and publications are finally hot off the
press. The new Guide looks great thanks to the design work of Norma Montaigne of
Anything Graphic. Visitors can pick one up at the Information Booth and the maps
are being included in mailed visitor packets. Due to cost of mailing the guide,
we are not sending it to all members but invite you to pick up a copy at the
Information Booth. If you would like multiple copies, please contact us. Thanks
to the businesses who helped defray the cost of reprinting by buying a
sponsorship.

BREAKFAST INVITATION
The Brandon Chamber and the Brandon Rotary
Club are partnering to welcome speakers from VocRehab Vermont and VABIR (Vermont
Association of Business, Industry, & Rehabilitation) to present their
services to the geater Brandon business community. These agencies assist people
with disabilities who want to work. The labor pool
of people with disabilities is relatively untapped and is available to benefit
businesses in the Greater Brandon region.
This breakfast will be held on November 18
at the Brandon Inn and will start at 7:15 am. We ask that reservations be made.
Chamber and Rotary members are urged to attend. Non-Rotarians interested in
attending are invited free of charge. This half hour presentation, as part
of the regular Rotary Club meeting, will include a Q & A session (i.e. Are
training funds and tax credits available?). To make a reservation or for more
information, contact the Chamber at 247-6401 or by email at: info@brandon.org.
See you at the breakfast!
SKATING IN CENTRAL PARK
OK, it may not rival Rockefeller Center,
but Brandon’s Central Park will be the home of the town’s Recreation
Department’s skating rink this winter. This ideas was suggested by the town’s
lodging businesspeople and embraced by the town. Instead of building a rink in
front of the sewer treatment plant (practical but not very enticing), a 80' x
30' rink will be grace Brandon’s main park. The Chamber has donated $200 to
the cost of the project. The town is eager for help from any / all willing
volunteers. Assistance will especially be needed with regular maintenance. If
you have any experience with ice rinks (or want to learn) and can help out,
please contact the Brandon Recreation Department at 247-0228.
HOLIDAY LIGHTING
Thanks to the many businesses who have
donated money to this year’s holiday lighting project. A couple of volunteers
are in place, ready to oversee the work. We appreciate all cooperation granting
access to an electrical source. Please let us know if you have any questions.
The town will be lit prior to the Chamber’s Memory Tree event, Nov. 28.
CHAMBER DUES TO BE COLLECTED SOON
Within several weeks, Chamber 2005 dues
bills will be mailed. The Chamber Board recently approved a very slight dues
increase. Once in a while, we examine dues structures of other Chambers of
similar size and service and we feel that the Brandon Chamber is still a great
value for the dollar.
WEDDING PROMOTIONS ON THE WEB
Brandon has many businesses which cater to
weddings, both directly and indirectly. These include lodging businesses,
downtown merchants, floral designers, musicians, restaurants, and hairdressers,
to name some. The Chamber will be adding a page(s) to our website designed to
help brides, grooms, and their guests make choices. If you would like your
business information to be included on the Wedding Page, please send us an email
with text / photo. There is no fee to participate — this is another benefit of
your Chamber membership.
HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS GRANT
The jury is still out on the high speed
internet access grant application we submitted to the State last week. The
$50,000 grant will be awarded in the coming weeks. The Chamber is committed to
seeing broadband access become available town-wide and we hope Brandon is one of
the grantees. Once the awards are announced, we will let you know all about the
proposed wireless network and how you will be able to be a part of it.
SAFER, SMARTER, MORE SECURE $50 BILLS NOW
IN CIRCULATION
Newly redesigned $50 notes are now in
circulation. The $50 note includes enhanced security features, subtle background
colors of blue and red, images of a waving American flag and a small metallic
silver-blue star. The new design is part of the U.S. government’s ongoing
efforts to stay ahead of counterfeiting and protect the integrity of U.S.
currency.
The older design $50 notes will remain in
circulation for some time to come and will remain legal tender. The new $50 note
is the second denomination in the Series 2004 currency. The first denomination
in the series to be redesigned was the $20 note, which began circulating in
October 2003.
While consumers should not use color to
check the authenticity of their currency (relying instead on user-friendly
security features – see below), color does add complexity to the note, making
counterfeiting more difficult. Different colors are being used for different
denominations, which will help everyone – particularly those who are visually
impaired – to tell denominations apart.
The new $50 design retains three important
security features that are easy for consumers and merchants alike to check:
* Watermark: A faint image, similar to the
portrait, which is part of the paper itself and is visible from both sides when
held up to the light.
* Security thread: Also visible from both
sides when held up to the light, this vertical strip of plastic is embedded in
the paper and spells out the denomination in tiny print.
* Color-shifting ink: The numeral in the
lower right corner on the face of the note, indicating its denomination, changes
color from copper to green when the note is tilted.
NEXT CHAMBER MEETING - NOVEMBER 29
The Chamber’s next meeting will be
Monday, November 29 (5th Monday of the month) at the Ball and Chain
Café at 7:15 pm. Our official "Annual Meeting," the Chamber Board
will reorganize as new Board members and Officers will be elected. All Chamber
members and the general public are invited.

MOONLIGHT MADNESS -
DECEMBER 1
Business owners and shoppers love Moonlight Madness. This is
a great time for holiday shoppers to jump-start the season, support local
businesses, and pick up some unique and wonderful gifts. The registration form
is enclosed detailing the participation fee and rules.
HOLIDAY LIGHTING
The Chamber is spearheading an effort to result in a lively
and bright downtown this holiday season and we are dedicating some auction
proceeds toward that goal. For $50 you can help support this activity. We will
do the buying, hiring, stringing, and removing. All you need to do is help out
with a small financial contribution. The more money we raise, the more we can
light! Please see the enclosed registration form for more details.
DOWNTOWN DIRECTORYThe Chamber is proud to send to you our
latest publication, A Guide to Downtown Brandon. This brochure was in production
for way too long but it is finally hot off the press! It was self-funded by the
businesses listed and an effort was made to include every downtown Chamber
member. We feel it is a good addition to our printed materials. The brochure
will be distributed at our Information Booth and with visitor and relocation
packets. It is also hoped that lodging businesses will keep a supply on hand and
keep them in all guest rooms. You may pick up a supply at the Information Booth
(look inside the cabinet doors) or contact the Chamber and we will get them out
to you. A special thanks to Liza Myers for her great design work on this
brochure.
LEAF PEOPLE THANKS
Thanks to everyone who came out and made their own Leaf
People this past Saturday. The weather held up and the town was humming with
lots of activity. It was wonderful for so many of Brandon’s non-profit
organizations to share Central Park: Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce, Brandon
Lions Club, Brandon Rotary Club, St. Mary’s Church, and the Harvest Program.
The Chamber, sponsor of the event, is grateful to so many
people for all their assistance in making the event so successful: Bart Lund for
all his great working pre-cutting and pre-screwing hundreds of frames, Bruce and
Nancy Ness for their unwavering support and all-day help, Sue Dier and Johnna
Foster for braving "the chicken coop" early in the morning, Bart Lund,
Bruce Ness, Blaine Cliver, Carson Leary and Ariel Mondlak for frame-making, and
Stephanie Jerome, Stephanie Taylor, Nancy Leary, Sally Wood, Claire Ayer, Sheri
Sullivan, Lauren Hatcher, Mary Cliver, Cindy Thomas, Donna Hutchison, Norma
Page, Carolyn Whittaker, and Jessa Mondlak for head and body work! Special
thanks to Louisa Jerome for helping with "heads." Also thanks to
Kelsey Hunt, Sarah and Jen Leary, Hannah White, and Louisa Jerome for
clothes-sorting. Thanks to Ann Young and the Harvest Program for the donation of
hay bales. Thanks to so many community members who cleaned closets and donated
old clothes, hats, shoes, etc. Thanks to Tom Schmeltzenbach, Superintendent of
Public Works, for being cooperative with our leftover garbage!
The Chamber also thanks and recognizes many members for their
great work with the Leaf People beautifully gracing our downtown: Sally Wood for
her expertise, supplies, use of barn, and making accessories and sewing clothes
all winter. We couldn’t do it without her! Also thanks to Joe Acinapura, Sheri
Sullivan, Alyssa Zollman, Johnna Foster, Jim Jasmin, and Sue Dier.
Thanks to our "hangers" Joe Acinapura, Dick Kirby,
Anthony Albarello, Mary Cliver, Cindy and Ed Thomas for hanging the People all
over Brandon’s streets and parks. They look awesome!
MISSING LEAF PERSON
Aye Carrumba! The "Mexican" Leaf Person which had
been sitting around the "Bank Corner" was stolen last weekend. Any
information leading to the recovery of the "Mexican" would be greatly
appreciated and could possibly lead to a reward (in pesos, of course) Please

HIGH SPEED INTERNET ACCESS
It has long been a goal of the Chamber to see that high speed
internet access is available to all businesses and residents in Brandon. The
Chamber and the Town of Brandon are now working cooperatively to apply for a
state grant intended to bring this type of service to rural Vermont. The first
stage of the application is due in mid-September and if selected, we will move
on to the second stage application. The Chamber has been working closely with a
Bethel consulting firm which has proposed a wireless network which will be
designed to provide town-wide coverage. If you would like more information about
our progress to date and prospects for the future, please contact us.

KILLINGTON CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE RALLY
The Killington Classic Motorcycle Rally is looking for
participation from Brandon businesses for their second annual Poker Chip Fun
Run. The event will be held Thursday, September 9th, 2004. It’s
designed to get riders to explore Brandon and browse through some stores.
Last year approximately 2300
motorcycle enthusiast from 17 states attended the three-day rally. The poker
chip run is on the first day of the rally and there are dozens of other events
simultaneously run. They expect 150-200 motorcycles to take part. The poker chip
run stops in three towns in Vermont.
The organizers will distribute cloth bags containing colored
poker chips to 5 or 6 retail locations in downtown who would like to be
involved. The participant will visit Brandon and go to the selected locations to
pick out a chip. They will receive prizes depending on the value of the chips
they return. Of course the values are not determined till the end of the day so
no one has a clue. The organizers will send along a Killington Classic FUN RUN
location sign with the bags for the store window. They also will distribute maps
and locations of the stops. Participation is easy through the Chamber. Give a
call or send an email and we’ll get you what you need.
CHECK 21 INFORMATION FROM FBNB
One of the many tasks that First Brandon National Bank has
worked on and will continue to refine is "Check 21." Check 21 is the
name that is commonly given to legislation enacted last year and, which becomes
effective October 28, 2004. This legislation, basically, enables a
"substitute check" to be presented and accepted as a negotiable
instrument. The advantage to this legislation is that, over time, Check 21 will
speed up collection times (by reducing "float") within the banking
industry and also speed up the way that some deposited items are returned to
both the bank and our customers. Another advantage is that Check 21 will, again,
over time, eliminate or significantly reduce both the transportation costs
associated with physically delivering "paper items – i.e. checks"
and the operational and monetary risk associated with the transportation of
these items.
While Check 21 does not mandate check truncation or imaging,
we believe that this is an excellent time to take advantage of First Brandon’s
check safekeeping services. First Brandon has further provided a brochure
(enclosed) defining the affects that the new legislation will have during the
process of substituting checks and imaged checks. Steve Carr is looking for
photos of Brandon streetscapes (in particular, but not at all limited to, the
downtown area) that
show what Brandon looked like at other points in time, pre- and post-WWII. For
instance, Burt Howland’s jewelry store where Brooks is now, the old American
Legion and baseball field where the Grand Union is, Lyle Watters’ taxi stand
the fence where Waterfall Park is, Miller & Ketcham Furniture Store, Frank’s
Pool Hall, John Steindler’s Bookstore, the CV office, Ralph Humiston’s IGA
in any of the four locations, etc. He would like to borrow materials long enough
to scan then and he will return them right away. Once they are scanned to a
digital photo, they can be put into a collage, saved to a CD or any other useful
or educational application. The photos could be helpful as downtown improvements
continue with lighting, roads, trees, etc. If you have anything useful for
Steve, please give him a call or send an email. 247-3921 or sacarr@together.net.
BLUEBIRD EVENT
As part of the "Brandon is for the Birds"
celebration, the Moosalamoo Association and Vermont State Parks is sponsoring a
free bluebird program at Branbury State Park, Thursday night, September 2, at
7:30 PM at the Branbury Nature Center. Learn about bluebirds and have the
optional opportunity to build a bluebird house at the conclusion to the program
(small materials fee). Questions, call Bruce Brown, 247-3971.
NEXT CHAMBER MEETING - AUGUST 30
The Chamber’s next meeting will be LAST Monday of August,
Aug. 30 at the Ball and Chain Café at 7:15 pm. All Chamber members and the
general public are invited.
JULY 2004 CHAMBER NEWS
16th ANNUAL GREAT BRANDON AUCTION RESULTS
Once again, the Chamber’s Auction was an outstanding
success. Each and every year, we close the auction thinking "this year was
the best" and "we could never do this good again." Yet we do! Of
course, we couldn’t do it without you, our members and community support. From
donors to buyers to volunteers, every contribution is appreciated. This year’s
auction started with a tribute to Tom Whittaker. This was the first Brandon
Auction without Tom’s auctioneering talent but at age 97, he finally decided
to retire! We appreciate Tom’s 15 years of service to us.
The auction progressed with many exciting, unusual, funny,
and artistic items up for grabs. Barb Watters, our esteemed auctioneer for 16
years running, never let her voice give out. Guest auctioneer Warren Kimble
helped out in the middle of the event to give Barb a break. A young auction-goer
from Proctor won the 50/50 raffle and got to auction a gift certificate with
help from Barb! Between the three of them, the Chamber raised over $20,000 to
support our programs, activities, and events.
Thanks to so many ...
Tom Millington who always pitches us great tents.
Naylor and Breen Builders, always willing to lend us their
big truck for Auction Day.
Ed Thomas, our sound man, who picks up our sound equipment in
Rutland and wires the park!
Brandon Lumber for loaning us staging materials.
There are too many auction helpers to name but every one of
them is appreciated. From 8 year olds to +80 year olds, our fine volunteers
worked many long hours and lifted many heavy items!
And to the awesome auction management team of Joel Mondlak,
Bernie Carr and Barb Watters — we couldn’t do it without you!
CHAMBER TO REPRINT POPULAR MAP AND GUIDE
MEMBERS CAN BUY A SPONSORSHIP
The Chamber’s premier tourism/relocation collateral will
soon be reprinted. This is a four-color map and guide, which was last printed
about four years ago. The map’s boundaries extend from Route 100 to Lake
Champlain and from just south of Middlebury to just north of Rutland.
Information on the flip side of the map gives readers information helpful to
both those coming to visit and those interested in moving here.
The Chamber is selling "Map and Guide Sponsorships"
to our members for a fee of $100. We will be printing 10,000 pieces and expect
the supply to last for approximately three years. One map panel will be
dedicated for the Sponsors. This is an excellent way for you to get your name
out to 1000s of potential customers over the next few years at a remarkably
reasonable fee. A sponsorship registration form is enclosed. If you would like a
copy of the current Map and Guide, please contact us and we will put one
in the mail to you.
DOWNTOWN STOREFRONTS ARE 100% FULL
For the first time in recent (and long-term) memory, Brandon’s
downtown storefronts are 100% full. We have all witnessed the remarkable changes
of our town over the past few years. Due to the efforts of so many people,
millions of dollars in private investment, and a wonderful town-wide spirit,
Brandon has achieved what so many small towns have not been able to do. Some
long-vacant second floor space is now occupied and it appears more will be put
into re-use in the future. Another trend is the outward growth of downtown.
Downtown Brandon has often been described as a bicycle wheel
with many spokes. While the spokes are primarily residential (Park, Pearl,
Carver, Union Streets, etc.), there is a creeping commercial growth in just
about every one of these directions. Entrepreneurs eager to be a part of Brandon’s
downtown renaissance are finding new uses for old buildings on the edge of the
commercial business district. It is rewarding to see historic buildings being
used for small businesses which complement our current offerings.
Reports from around the country show that many small towns
are dying. We should all be proud of what has been accomplished here. Kudos to
everyone who has taken a risk, made an investment, and followed through with a
vision. And a big thank you to everyone who supports the small local businesses
who have taken those risks. Lets all remember to continue to buy local and
support friends and neighbors.
VERMONT TRAVELERS GUIDEBOOK ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY IN STATE
PUBLICATION
The Chamber announces its plans to once again purchase full
page 4-color ad space in the 2005 Vermont Travelers Guidebook, published by the
Vermont Chamber of Commerce. This magazine is the fulfillment piece the State of
Vermont tourist office sends to inquirers. Their print run is xxx,000.
The Chamber will design a co-op ad and offer the opportunity
to members to purchase space for $300. For the first time in many years, the VT
Chamber is NOT requiring co-op page advertisers to buy a listing in the
magazine. You don’t have to be a VT Chamber member to participate but you do
have to be a Brandon Chamber member. A participation form will be mailed to all
members in the tourism sector within the next month. For more information,
please contact us.
FBNB GAINS STATE AWARD
Congratulations to First Brandon National Bank, recent
recipient of a Vermont Centennial Business Award. This award was given to
businesses which have employed Vermonters for more than 100 years. According to
the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, FBNB has been a local employer since 1863!
THANKS TO PARADE WORKERS
The Brandon Rotary Club and the Chamber worked cooperatively at the
Independence Day Parade to sell hot dogs, hamburgers and cold sodas. Some
volunteers were members of both organizations! Thanks to all those who worked
the holiday and put in the hours on behalf of our non-profits.

JUNE 2004 CHAMBER NEWS
MAKING BRANDON BLOOM
Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help strip sod, haul top
soil, weed, plant and donate money to the Brandon Parks planting effort. We are
now ready to plant annuals and mulch. We are delighted with the response we've
received and are hoping to sustain this effort and create a permanent committee
to care for and enhance these gardens for years to come. If you'd like to be
involved in any way, please call Mary Cliver (247-0180), Tom Brown (247-6860) or
Sally Wood (247-6267). Thanks a 'bunch. ~ The Blossom Brigade
ATTN: DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES
Summer is here. Please help out with a daily dose of
water for the flower barrel or tree closest to you!
Also, some of the downtown business owners are studying the
downtown parking situation and will be providing information to the downtown
merchants in the next few weeks.
CHAMBER BOARD RETREAT
As reported earlier, the Chamber Board met a couple of months
ago for a long-range goal-setting retreat. After the evening, notes were
compiled and board members were asked to prioritize the list of important
activities they identified. This list will be helpful in determining the Chamber’s
events and activities in the coming year(s). Here are the top three results, in
prioritized order:
Public Relations / Publicity (for our members, our
organization, our town)
Political Action - lobbying (on behalf of business
interests)
Fiscal Responsibility / Revenue Raising (for the Chamber)
and Economic Development (for the town)
A host of other activities were identified and will be
included as we write work plans and determine where to focus efforts. Chamber
Board members found the retreat a helpful and motivating experience and
expressed interest in repeating the exercise annually.
2004 CHAMBER SCHOLARSHIP
The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship is awarded
annually to a student who is well-rounded and has participated in school and
outside activities. The student should also be pursuing a course of study in
business or a business-related major, or who aspires to be entrepreneurial. This
year’s applicants were exceptional and every student would have been a worthy
recipient. Unfortunately, the pot of money is small and only one student can be
honored.
The Chamber is pleased to present their 2004 Scholarship to
Eric Robinson. Eric is pursuing a major in engineering or business. He has
worked part time during his high school years at a variety of local businesses,
gaining knowledge and experience in the business world. He plans to study at
Clemson University in the fall.
CONCERT SERIES LINE-UP
The Chamber will be sending out a town-wide mailing in the
next week or so highlighting our concerts and summer events. Thanks to all the
advertisers who helped make the flier a success. The bands scheduled to play
are: Ten Rod Road, Wind That Shakes the Barley, Gene Childers & The Jubilee
Jazz Band and The Doughboys. For more information on these bands and the concert
dates please consult the Chamber’s website or the flier.

the world. www.conservation.org/xp/news/press_releases/2004/052604.xml
PARADE IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!
The Chamber is still looking for a few good hot dog handlers.
If you would like to help out for a couple of hours on Sat., July 3, we could
use you to grill, take orders, or handle cash. The Chamber will once again team
up with the Brandon Rotarians and sell hot dogs / hamburgers under one tent.
Please let us know if you can help out! Shifts are two hours.
From the Parade Committee:
Invitations for Floats and Parade

Celebration Committee's data base. All entry cards should be sent in as soon as
possible to allow time for the lineup to be established and instructions mailed

lineup road and numbers assigned for easy lineup. All parade entries will be
given a number sign to display in order to be identified by the judges.Any group
needing an invitation and entry form may call 247-6587 to have one mailed, or
may pick one up at the counter at the Brandon Library or Briggs Carriage
Bookstore. The float theme is "America
the Beautiful" and entries from one and all are welcome. Get yours in soon
! The parade will step off at 1:00 PM and is a part of the day long Independence

Village (just North of the village).
CHAMBER AUCTION TO FOLLOW
Mark Your Calendars! The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce’s
16th Annual Great Brandon Auction will be held this year on Tuesday,
July 20 starting at 4 pm. As always, the Chamber is asking the community and our
member businesses for donations. This is the Chamber’s ONE AND ONLY
FUNDRAISER. Be creative, search high and low — that perfect auction donation
is out there. A chamber board member should be calling to directly ask for a
donation but if you can’t wait, please call or email us and we can arrange for
a pick-up.
INFO BOOTH
Brandon’s lodging owners have partnered to staff the
Information Booth this summer. There is volunteer coverage each
afternoon/evening. While the Information Booth is designed to be self-service,
the innkeepers have determined the personal touch may be just what it takes to
ensure that visitors spend extra time in town! Congratulations to these business
owners who are finding time in their busy days for this service.

BIRDHOUSE KICK-OFF A SUCCESS
The Brandon Birdhouses flew into town on Memorial Day weekend
bringing cold but dry weather and lots of visitors. Now the birdhouses have been
located for the summer and a locator map helps visitors find them all. A
birdhouse catalog will soon be available from the Brandon Artists Guild.
Thanks:
The Chamber took part in the kick-off event by scooping ice cream. Thanks to
Stephanie Jerome, Nancy Spalding-Ness, Amy Spalding, Mary Cliver, Del Cook, Lois
Jackson, Sally Wood, Claire Ayer, and Steve Kellogg for helping out. Also thanks
to the Brandon Inn for their help in procuring and storing the ice cream! The
Chamber is fortunate to have such great volunteers!
BRANDON TOWN PLAYERS
Brandon’s community theater group
is pleased to present "A Night On The Town ... Bits and Pieces." The
show will be performed at OVUHS on Thursday, June 17 (all proceeds to be turned
over to the Brandon Town Hall from this performance), Friday, June 18 and
Saturday, June 19. All shows start at 7:30 pm. Come enjoy an evening of laughs,
music, and great entertainment.
FASHION SHOW A SUCCESS
On behalf of The Friends of the Brandon Town Hall I would
like to thank all of those who helped make our Fashion Show fundraiser so
successful. Specifically, I would like to thank the businesses and crafters who
participated and donated gifts, the models, the local media, North 7 Studios who
designed our flyer and the Lilac Inn for their special service. We raised over
$1700. Helen Noel of a former Brandon Players group donated an additional $1700
on their behalf. This community event and future efforts will go a long way
towards restoring our beautiful Town Hall. ~ Lois Acinapura, Friends of the
Brandon Town Hall

MAY 2004 CHAMBER NEWS
ANKEE MAGAZINE CHOOSES BRANDON AS
"HIDDEN JEWEL"
Brandon is Named as One of Five Extraordinary Places to Live
in New England
DUBLIN, NH: (April 26, 2004) -- The May 2004 issue of YANKEE
Magazine deems Brandon, Vermont one of New England’s "Hidden
Jewels." Brandon is one of five communities named an "extraordinary
place to live."
YANKEE Magazine’s glowing appraisal of Brandon can be found
in "Hidden Jewels" a ten-page, photo-rich feature story that will
inform some 2 million readers of "extraordinary places to live that should
only get better in the years ahead." Yankee looked for areas that offer
affordable housing, a sense of community and safety, a feeling of tranquility
without boredom, and easy access to goods and services.
Most importantly, communities were chosen that are on the
rise -- "cities and towns that are good places to live now and are likely
to be even more desirable a decade from now." YANKEE Magazine describes the
beauty of the town, the historic nature of the core village, the dramatic effect
of two cascading waterfalls, and the many places in downtown that make it a
popular destination for visitors and a great place to live for residents.
The article also devotes considerable attention to the
availability of affordable housing that adds to the allure of Brandon. The
article quotes local folk article Warren Kimble and Fred Rowe of Rowe Real
Estate.
"Our readers know from reading YANKEE Magazine and the
Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England that Brandon is a great place to
visit," said Jamie Trowbridge, president of Yankee Publishing -- publishers
of YANKEE Magazine and The Old Farmer’s Almanac. "This article reveals
that is an equally wonderful place to live.
This acknowledgment from Yankee Magazine has led to an
unprecedented number of visitor packet and relocation requests. The entire
article will soon be found on-line on the Chamber’s website!
CHAMBER BOARD RETREAT
The Chamber board met in a relaxed setting last month to do
some long-range goal-setting. A trained facilitator helped the group stay
focused as they reviewed old priorities and set new ones. Once finalized, we
will publish the goals, which will act as a work plan for the coming year.
CONCERT SERIES LINE-UP
The plans for our 5th annual concert series are
being finalized. We will announce bands and locations in the coming weeks in
local papers and in our next newsletter!
NEW EVENT SIGNBOARD
As announced in the last newsletter, the Chamber is pleased
to announce the availability of the new town event signboard for non-profit
organizations to rent. Thanks to Ed Thomas and Dick Kirby for assistance with
hanging the boards on either side of the bus stop.
For the small fee of $20 a week, non-profit organizations may
rent the signboard for advertising events. This is great exposure at a nominal
fee — an estimated +10,000 vehicles a day pass through Brandon’s downtown on
Route 7! Contact the Chamber to check availability or register your upcoming
event. All announcements are subject to editing as appropriate. Call today —
First Come / First Served!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Are you good at scooping ice cream? What about flipping hot
dogs?
On Sat., May 29, after the Birdhouse unveiling in Central
Park at 1 pm, Chamber volunteers will be scooping free ice cream in the Brandon
Green park starting at 2 pm. Last year we scooped for 750 after the Pig Parade
and we hope to duplicate those efforts. Plan on spending two hours and reaping
the benefit of scooping your own ice cream cone too!
On Sat., July 3, the Chamber will once again team up with the
Brandon Rotarians and sell hot dogs / hamburgers under one tent during the
Independence Day Celebration. Volunteers are needed to set up, handle cash, flip
wieners, and clean up. Minimum of 1 ½ hour shift requested.
Please contact the Chamber if you can help out during either
of these tasty events!
AUCTION DONATIONS NEEDED
Mark Your Calendars! The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce’s
16th Annual Great Brandon Auction will be held this year on Tuesday,
July 20 starting at 4 pm. As always, the Chamber is asking the community and our
member businesses for donations. This is the Chamber’s ONE AND ONLY
FUNDRAISER. Be creative, search high and low — that perfect auction donation
is out there. A chamber board member should be calling to directly ask for a
donation but if you can’t wait, please call or email us and we can arrange for
a pick-up.
BUSINESS P/R
The Chamber continues to offer a no-cost-to-you benefit of
promoting your business. If you would like a press release written about your
business — new hire, awards or recognitions received, new partnerships or
alliances forged, an expansion, you name it — we would be happy to write it
and send it in to local newspapers. Lauren Hatcher free lance writes for us and
is eager to write about you. Please contact us for details.
MERCHANTS UPDATE
The Merchants met last month and discussed a variety of ideas
and issues. A representative from Adelphia Media Services was on hand to discuss
the power of cable television advertising. If you were not at the meeting but
would like a packet of Adelphia advertising, please contact the Chamber.
Other topics discussed include flower plantings in downtown,
parking, the Nest With The Best campaign, and the Holistic Health Fair coming to
town.
PARKING
There are still some merchants / employees parking in prime
spaces downtown. Summer is coming and with it will be birdhouses and a new
downtown restaurant. We urge you all to find off-street parking and keep spaces
open for customers.
LODGING UPDATE
Brandon’s lodging owners have been busy lately getting
ready for their upcoming high season. The group has toured most of the lodging
properties in town, familiarizing themselves with each other’s properties.
This is a great partnership — instead of viewing each other as competition,
they feel they all offer "something a bit different" and rely upon
each other for referrals.
The innkeepers made a proposal to the Chamber Board last week
requesting permission to staff the Information Booth this summer with
volunteers. Booth staffing was discontinued about seven years ago due to the
inability to secure enough staffing. The innkeepers are planning on managing the
Booth volunteers and their schedule. If you are interested in sitting a shift in
the Info Booth this summer, please contact Norm Milot at Rosebelle’s -
247-00098 or Doug Sawyer at Lilac Inn - 247-5463
INFO BOOTH
If you haven’t been in the Booth lately, make sure to stop
in and grab some brochures / maps to help plan summer day trips around Vermont.
HOLISTIC HEALTH FAIR
Beyond Infinity is sponsoring a town wide event on September
11 and 12, 2004. The Fair will host approximately 50-60 vendors at a variety of
locations around downtown, both indoors and outside, for a Holistic Health Fair
weekend. For more details call Karl at 247-5100.

NESHOBE SCHOOL GRADUATION CHALLENGE
Each year Neshobe School 6th graders end their
year with a program called "Graduation Challenge." One aspect of this
includes learning about the local community, past, present, and future. This
year we will be focusing on the buildings and businesses of the downtown area.
During the weeks of 5/17, 5/24, and 5/31 school officials would like to bring
groups of about six students (plus an adult) to tour buildings and/or businesses
with a particular focus on what the history of that locale might be. If you
would be willing to host such a group, please contact Laurie Cox at the school:

second half of the tour will be held on Monday, March 29 beginning at 10 am at
the Brandon Motor Lodge.
"AVAILABILITY ONLINE"
WEB-BASED AVAILABILITY SERVICE
Availability Online is a Vermont internet-based service that
enables lodging properties to enhance their own websites with a room
availability calendar, a secure reservation requesting form, and more. Once
signed up for the service, businesses will be able to display the following on
the Brandon Chamber site at no charge: Room availability on the group Brandon
Chamber calendar, a link to your homepage, and a link to your detailed
availability calendar/reservation request form. For more information visit:
http://www.availabilityonline.com.
Lodging properties will be contacted directly from
Availability Online. Regardless of whether or not you choose to sign up for
their service, a benefit of your Chamber membership is that your property will
be listed with Availability Online with a direct link to your website.
Properties without a website will have a name and phone listing. The Chamber
does not pay for this opportunity however there is a cost to individual
properties if they choose to use the service.
CHAMBER GOAL-SETTING RETREAT
Every few years, the Chamber Board meets in a relaxed setting
to revisit old goals and perhaps write new ones. With all the changes taking
place in Brandon over the past year, the time is here once again! Board members
will meet at the end of the month to focus on this agenda item.
RUTLAND B-2-B TRADE SHOW
ROUTE 73 FLOODING PROBLEM
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION
Area business people, local Selectboard members, legislators,
and State Agency of Transportation officials recently gathered to discuss the
annual Route 73 flooding issue. While State officials seemed determined that the
less expensive fix (working on the Leicester-Whiting Rd.) was the right
approach, business people made it clear that the State should work on Route 73.
Ideas were offered which may alleviate some of the flooding resulting in fewer
road-closed dates while costing far less than the $3.5 million the state has
estimated the full job would require. If you are interested in knowing more
about this issue, please contact your Selectboard or legislative
representatives.

Commerce’s website."
SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE
The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce
it is now accepting scholarship application forms from graduating OVUHS students
pursuing a course of study in business or business-related major. The Chamber
Scholarship will be presented to a student who is well-rounded, has participated
in school and outside activities, who is pursuing higher education, and is
planning on a career in business or aspires to be entrepreneurial. Interested
students should contact the Guidance Office for applications. The deadline for
applying is May 7, 2004. For more information, you may also call the Chamber.
MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The Chamber’s new membership directory will be available
soon and will be mailed when it returns from the printer. The format has changed
to make the directory more user-friendly and useful. Readers will notice an
alphabetical listing of all businesses, a separate list of individual members,
and separate pages listing business names and their business category(ies). We
have a record number of members this year (122 paid business members and 23 paid
individual members) and are proud to offer a variety of services that members
find beneficial.
FRAUD ALERT FROM FIRST BRANDON NAT’L BANK
Official looking emails from an FDIC look-alike are being
sent to consumers stating that Tom Ridge of Homeland Security has advised the
FDIC to suspend all deposit insurance on the recipient’s bank account due to
suspected violations of the USA Patriot Act. The email requests the verification
of personal identity and bank account information in order to lift the
suspension. Be aware that the FDIC will never request information via
email. The recommended practice is to delete the email.

PRESIDENT’S AWARDS ANNOUNCED: ANNUAL DINNER HUGE
SUCCESS
The Chamber’s Annual Dinner was
held recently at the Brandon Inn with a crowd of well over 100 members of the
business community and their guests. The festivities included a delicious Aprés
Ski dinner with a fine air of celebration. Chamber President Stephanie Zak
Jerome presented the 2003 President’s Awards to two businesses: Holden
Financial Services, Inc. and The Brandon Artists Guild. Stephanie recognized
Holden Financial Services for their many years of service and commitment to
Brandon residents. Throughout the company’s years of growth, Steve Kellogg and
Paul Gladding of Holden Financial have given back immeasurably to the community.
In a second award, The Brandon
Artists Guild was honored for their accomplishments. The Guild has been in
business for less than five years and has done a tremendous amount to raise the
awareness of the arts in the area. Their Really Really Pig Show project was an
outstanding success and gave a major boost to the entire business community last
summer. The Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to bestow the President’s
Award annually to a business and/or individual who "make Brandon a better
place to live and work."
In addition to the President’s
Awards, Stephanie presented four "Excellence on Main Street Awards"
for outstanding building renovation projects. The recipients were Barbara Ebling
and Matthew Gibbs of the Briggs Carriage Bookstore for their work on the 1919
Block, The McKernon Group for rebuilding the Howe Scale Block, Nancy and Jim
Leary for their renovation of the Conant Block, and Warren and Lorraine Kimble
for the renovation of Barker’s Garage and for opening the Warren Kimble
Gallery and Museum downtown.
Stephanie acknowledged retiring
Board members Lois Jackson, a tireless supporter of tourism for many years, and
Bob Schmidt, the Chamber’s money master! While Bob is no longer the Chamber
Treasurer, he has agreed to continue being our bookkeeper and we are very
grateful!
At the end of the evening,
Stephanie summarized Brandon’s great year, which has given the town a new
sense of pride and optimism. Closing remarks were followed by a terrific video
on Brandon produced by staff at Visual Learning Company. Special thanks to Sarah
and Louis Pattis of the Brandon Inn for the wonderful meal.
