Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce Announces
Partnership Opportunity for the
Future of the Stephen A. Douglas Historic Home
Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce President Bernie Carr recently introduced a new Chamber initiative. The Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Dunmore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have announced an exciting proposal for the Stephen A. Douglas historic house, located on Grove St., in Brandon. The home is the birthplace of Stephen A. Douglas, well known for his Presidential candidacy and his famous set of debates opposite Abraham Lincoln. The home was built in approximately 1802 and Douglas was born there in 1813. The home has been owned by the DAR Chapter since 1917 but the few remaining Chapter members are unable to steward the property in the manner in which they would like.
The Chamber was approached to see if there was interest in the organization taking title to the property, upgrading the building while retaining the historic nature, and making it available to the public. The Chamber Board of Directors has established an exploratory committee to review all avenues of property ownership, availability of grants and other funding sources, and to determine feasibility. The Chamber would like to include interested Chamber and community members in determining the future of this national treasure.
